likesforests vs likesforests Sr.

I played my Dad a brief match and scored +4 -0 =0. That's not surprising since he only plays a few games per year, but what did surprise me is that it takes me longer to beat laymen now than a year or two ago. I'm certain I haven't gotten worse. I think I've just gotten better at determining whether an attack is sound and at restricting counterplay.

I can't wait for Sunday, my next USCF tournament. :)

Well, you had won by move 7. I guess checkmate takes longer with the queens off? :)

True, I suppose that's the way to look at it! I'm beating laymen faster than ever, it's just taking me longer to checkmate them. :)

25.f7+ made me howl with laughter. that pawn chain is waaaay too long!

Hehe! There were other ways to win but f5-f6-f7 seemed very pretty. :)

haha very nice! that reminds me of the games I play with my dad. his strategy is usually to serve me plenty of rum&coke before we play.

Hmm, serving alcoholic beverages before a match... I like it! I've got to try that at my next rated tournament =P

likesforests, I wish my dad played chess. Was there any way your dad could have saved his knight after 6.Qa4+? I couldn't see one.

6...c6! would've blocked the check and protected his knight. I'm embarrassed to say I missed that defense during the game. ;)

Man that is awesome! I wish my Dad played chess! He just likes to go the track and put money on the horses!

Good luck on Sunday!

It looked like it was pretty much a hammering. Like Glenn said, it was essentially over on move 7. Maybe it's just you win differently.

LF: You owned the game...complete domination!!! Look over some GM games against even 1300 rated players; it takes time. I played GM Christiansen he had won by move 8 or so; yet he never checkmated me even by move 35...he just won by converting his advantages. That is in my opinion a mark of a mature chess player.

The last time my dad played serious chess was in 2005 at teh NH open. We had 3 generations of blunders represented. He's about 1550 player. It was awesome growing up in a chess household!

Tommyg, Blunderprone - We also went over a couple of the My System games together... it was fun. :)

L.E.P., RetiredPawn - Of course you are right. Having patience when converting the point is probably more a strength than a weakness. If you rush and give your opponent counter-chances that is much worse!
