Games, 9/12/06

On CTS I reached 84.5% accuracy tonight! dktransform beat me to it, but I'm back on top again... for a few hours. Got to keep setting the accuracy bar higher. :)

Loss: dbrnoz(1514)-likesforests(1485)

1. e4 d5 2. e5 Bf5 3. d4 e6 4. Nc3 c5 5. Bb5+ Nc6 6. dxc5 a6 7. Bxc6+ bxc6 8. b4 a5 9. Ba3 axb4 10. Bxb4 Qb8 11. a3 Qxe5+ 12. Nge2 Be7 13. O-O Bd8 14. Re1 Qc7 15. Nd4 Bg6 16. a4 Ne7 17. Qg4 O-O 18. Nce2 Nf5 19. Bd2 Nxd4 20. Nxd4 Be7 21. Bf4 Qa7 22. Be3 Qd7 23. Nf3 Bxc2 24. Bh6 Bf6 25. Ne5 Qc7 26. Bf4 Qb7 27. Qg3 Rxa4 28. Rxa4 Bxa4 29. h3 Qb4 30. Nd7 Qxe1+ 31. Kh2 Rc8 32. Nxf6+ Kf8 33. Bd6# 1-0

6...a6 -- An immediate 6...Bxc6 was better.

12...Be7 -- I spent 4 minutes on this move, which is rather silly.

13...Bd8 -- A very inactive spot for my bishop. I must post them actively, even if I ideally want to preserve the bishop pair.

31...Rc8?? -- 31.Bd4 was much better. I was so far ahead, losing an exchange wouldn't matter and would end White's counterplay.

32...Kf8?? -- Argh! I could've used the time I wasted on turn 12 here.

What is "CTS" ? I thought you meant "CT Art" but apparently not?

Thanks....

CTS = Chess Tactics Server. It's a free tool that serves up tactical problems that you try to solve within 10 seconds. According to Scientific American, strong chess players "see" tactics rather than calculate them. If you can't find a tactic in 10 seconds there's a good chance you'll miss it over the board. Some use both tools at the same time: CT-ART for calculation, and CTS for pattern recognition.

I went and tried it (CTS) and signed up. It is a fantastic resource! Many thanks for the tip. It might be worth "spelling out" so to speak on a main blog entry as publicizing this great site would be a real service to chess players yet unaware of it.

I do also have CT-ART, which doesn't emphasize speed, as you point out.

Watch out world .... I just might gain a couple of hundred rating points in the next six months!

Great blog, I plan to visit at least weekly.

i agree with most of above:

but restated a little more differently, IMHO:

CT-Art 3.0 for slower but carefull tactics, more difficult calcuation
CTS for timed tactics, more rapid but less difficult pattern recognition.

ive tried one without the other, and opt for 2/3 CTS and 1/3 CTA3.0. if i do CT-Art alone, my brain slows down or is less responsive. if i do CTS alone, i cannot calculate quite as deeply. we need both, as my good friend likeForest suggests.

many users at CTS exist there, but likeForests and i are in the ratings second, and percentage success first camp, which is a lesser minority, and, to my way of thinking, much better a way, and closer to over the board play.

in OBP you dont consider it ok if you get every fourth move wrong! 1:9 is not even good there. perfection!

recommendation: see if you can do 95% right. not so easy at all!

Okay. So I was going to ask what CTS was but it was answered. I might post some more chess stuff, since you asked real nicely. Not sure yet.

Bob, glad you like it. I'll spell it out in the future. :)
